A powerful and impassioned collection of essays on the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza, written in real time during the annihilation by a leading scholar of Islamophobia.
All the world’s eyes are now on Gaza and Palestine. Arab and Muslim-American law scholar and author Khaled A. Beydoun shares his expertise and his perspective on the conflict in essays written from October 2023 to today, accompanied by over sixty pieces of art created by Palestinian political cartoonist, Mohammad Sabaaneh during the same time period.
Since October of 2023, the world has been watching as a horrific siege has been waged in Gaza. A devastating bombing campaign carried out by the Israeli military in response to a Hamas attack on Israeli civilians. We have witnessed the killing of tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, mostly women and children, and our hearts are breaking. Eyes on Gaza is Khaled A. Beydoun’s attempt to process what we have been seeing.
Beydoun opens our eyes to the historic events and the political motivations which impact the decision making of the leaders involved, as he shares his own story and his father’s story as Arab Muslims in America. He offers his expert perspective on events as they have unfolded. This book combines personal narrative, contemporary history, and thoughtful reporting to shine a light on the horror in Palestine today.

Eyes On Gaza Q&A with Khaled A. Beydoun
What motivated you to write these essays at such a painful time in human history?
Over the course of twelve harrowing months, with my eyes fixed on events in Gaza and my life forever changed by it, I wrote frequently and furiously. Writing, during this moment of great loss and horror, seemed to be my only safe haven. So, day in and day out, I published social media posts about the tragedies of the genocide to millions of my followers and wrote essays that addressed what was being overlooked by the major media.
Why is it important to you to analyze these events and share your insight with the world?
This book is my attempt as a law professor and a scholar to make sense of a horrifyingly absurd moment in my life, and in human history, when the world allowed a genocide to unfold before our very eyes. It is a proclamation that our stories will not be erased, and history will not bury our grief like it did the bodies of our friends and families.
Why did you include the artwork of Mohammad Sabaaneh in your collection of essays?
My family is from Lebanon, and I wrote these essays from that perspective in real time during the ongoing genocide. I wanted to incorporate the extraordinary artwork of Mohamed Sabaaneh, who lives and works in Palestine, artwork which he created in real time during the same time period. My words and his artwork mesh to form a powerful means to explore the story of genocide and ethnic cleansing from native perspectives.
What do you hope readers will take away from this book?
I hope it might be a companion for readers to learn about the unseen dimensions of one of history’s greatest tragedies. As the war and the genocide rage on, I hope this book will educate readers as the crisis continues to unfold. It is a book of the moment, one that aspires to find that elusive place where pieces of our stories left behind and buried, are made whole and we can finally find peace.
